Why This Study Matters

This research explores something we see every day in therapy: how a child’s ability to move their jaw, lips, and tongue can influence the speech-sound errors they make. It highlights how what we often call “phonological errors” (like cluster reduction, stopping, or final consonant deletion) can actually be rooted in how a child moves.

It’s powerful evidence that movement and motor control are key to understanding and improving speech.

Research that Reflects Our Mission

At Brave Wings Therapy, our work is built on looking deeper than just the sounds a child makes. We ask why those sounds are produced in a certain way, and that often leads us to the motor system.

This study supports exactly what our practice stands for:

  • Treating speech through a motor lens

  • Integrating speech, feeding, and myofunctional therapy to address the whole child.

  • Using advanced tools such as ultrasound visual biofeedback

  • Collaborating with trusted partners in airway, dental, and medical care

The findings add scientific validation to what we see in our clinic every day: when we strengthen a child’s motor foundation, clarity and stability in speech follow.

For Families and Professionals

For families, this research reinforces that therapy at Brave Wings is about more than practicing sounds. It’s about helping the entire oral-motor system grow stronger and more coordinated for lasting results.

For fellow professionals, it bridges a long-standing gap between phonology and motor speech, showing how understanding movement patterns can improve communication outcomes.

Our Commitment to Advancing the Field

As a clinic, we’re proud not only to provide therapy but to contribute to the science that informs it. We believe the best therapy happens when research and real-world practice come together.

We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Moore’s leadership in advancing the understanding of speech motor control and grateful to our entire Brave Wings team for embodying this mission in their work with children and families.
